The incident unfolded shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday, March 9, when troopers patrolling westbound on the Southern State Parkway spotted a Ford Taurus with Florida plates stopped on the Exit 41S ramp, New York State Police said.

When troopers attempted to check on the vehicle, the driver, 50-year-old Samuel Colon, suddenly made an illegal left turn and sped off, driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of Bayshore Road, police said.

Troopers pursued Colon, who ultimately lost control and crashed into the guardrail on the southbound Sagtikos State Parkway at the Exit S3 ramp. Even after the crash, Colon refused multiple lawful orders, according to police, and had to be forcibly removed from the vehicle.

Once Colon was in custody, troopers determined that he was intoxicated and reportedly found a loaded semi-automatic handgun on the floorboard, along with cocaine. Both the vehicle and gun had been reported stolen, police said.

Colon faces nearly a dozen charges, including DWI, criminal possession of a weapon, resisting arrest, and reckless driving. He is expected to be arraigned at a later date.
